4am

...and I can't sleep. See, I'm getting older, and I guess with that comes the sensitivity to drastic changes in sleep patterns. Last Friday night, I went out, and came home about 1 to walk Lois. We started walking when my phone rang. Um, my phone doesn't ring very often lately, for one, and for another, never does it ring past, 11? unless it's been established via text or email with a good friend that we're awake and it's a good time to call.

On the other end of the phone is a guy, let's call him P, and he is wasted. P and I went on a couple of nice but totally non-committal/non-romantic movie and one dinner "dates" in February and early March. He was going through chemotherapy at the time and wasn't really available, but I had a good time and told him I liked him. For a while I was excited and thought he might be a good long-term prospect, even. We kept up sporadic correspondence but I didn't expect anything after a while.

So, he says he's calling to see if I made it home OK (we had been talking - and drinking - that evening in a large group.) Then, he launches into a tirade of often accusative and somewhat surprising questions, like "What's going on with us?" and "Are we a couple?" and "What are we doing?", to which I tried to answer as honestly as possible - nothing, nope, and I don't know, but it was like my voice didn't cut through at all, and when it did, he was so upset and angry by what he thought I was saying, he'd go off onto another tirade and then I would have to talk him away from that... it was super frustrating. I even said a few times, are you sure you want to have this conversation? and, P, I think you are going to regret this call in the morning... to which he replied, sometimes angrily, but all 3 or 4 times convincingly, "I'm not that drunk!"

Anyway. I took him for his word that he was up for the conversation, and told him a couple things I thought would be good to clear up. I told him I had realized too late after our first real date that when I had been having a bad reaction to cologne I thought was the cabbie's, I figured out later it had been his, and I apologized if I made him feel bad and explained that I have supersensitive to fragrances and I had felt horrible about it all these months. This was not understood at all, and I immediately regretted sharing this. He went on for 15 minutes about smelling, smells and me hating the cabbie. Ugh.

Then when he said things were awkward between us now and I disagreed, he asked how I could say that, esp. since we had had the "history"...and I said that since nothing had happened between us romantically, I had given up thinking about him in that way. This was a BIG MISTAKE. He was like "WHY? BECAUSE I HAVE CANCER?!?!" Oh my God. No, no, no, I told him, it was because he didn't show any interest in me - not keeping in touch, never kissing me, cancelling plans, and not making any plans to go out more, etc. I assumed he just wasn't that into me, which was fine, because a) I honestly didn't know if I was into him, and b) he had bigger fish to fry at the time, and I did too - and the bottom line is that I certainly want someone who wants to kiss me. Come on, right?

This did not get through either. He kept saying it was the cancer, but never did he say he *was* indeed attracted to me or anything of the sort. I rested my case that it was better if we were friends anyway. I also said, after he accidentally hung up on me and then called back, that I'd be happy to start over and go out with him again if he asked me, but that we shouldn't consider anything weird. He seemed to agree with that and be content. I finally said good night sometime before 3am. I was exhausted, but also couldn't really sleep. It's weird to find out someone has been thinking about you like that. My mind raced though all of my bad romantic choices and my lack of options and wondered if anyone would ever want to kiss me, and if any guy would ever call me to see if I made it home OK sober. I still can't get these thoughts out of my mind.

(Long story longer on P is that he ignored me all weekend even when he saw me two days later, ignored 2 text msgs, and then finally responded somewhat apologetically to an email I sent saying, basically, WTF.)

And now it's after 4am and my sleep pattern is STILL not back to normal. I might have to go home early from work tomorrow to nap or something. This is terrible! My dang ever-broken heart...wish it could settle down and not be drawn into these things!

All right

I need to be at work prepping for the 4 classes I teach back-to-back tomorrow in less than 5 hours, and I'm lying here absolutely not able to sleep. It's hot, I'm exhausted, and I have tried everything to get tired enough to sleep. EVERYthing, believe me.

So tired was I today, that I even decided not to do my brick workout and I cancelled seeing good friend D. from the Iowa City days and her daughter, in town from Wisconsin, because I am so pooped. I also did things like go to the store at 10pm and make a chocolate cakey thing and eat some of it (usually sugar puts me right out) and watched a movie (Antares, an interesting 2004 Austrian film of the intertwined stories variety - love those - that makes everyone in relationships look bad) and took Lois for a long, long walk. I did my nails, flossed, did my face stuff that I should do every night but usually don't, and even changed my sheets.

What is going on? I think I need to buy a third fan, for the window itself, though that means it'll blow right on me as I sleep, and block Lois's view. And I'd have to wear clothes to bed, then, because the curtains would be open...

That's it, I have to buy a damn fan tomorrow. Along with doing the million things I didn't do today. Totally f-ed.

Pupil freak-out, habit lame-out

Here's one corner in the totally depressed neighborhood in Gary where I spent most of Saturday. You can just make out the crumbling house behind the sign and the guy in his bathrobe.

Friday night I went out with M. again for rockabilly at a bar one block from my house. Earlier, I also watched a DVD and made cookies. It was a good night, and I'm glad M. made me go out!

It was finally lovely weather here this weekend! and though I spent all Saturday outside, I had wanted to go running at least one day, but I got a splitting headache (I never, ever get headaches) when I got back from Ind. while walking Lois, and then my pupils totally dilated for about an hour, and I couldn't focus on anything, and the whites of my eyes were also bloodshot. Needless to say I didn't go running or go out. I am a little nervous about it, but will call my doctor tomorrow to follow up.

Habit #1: met/talked to a good one Saturday while canvassing for Obama/registering voters for the Indiana primary election. He was also doing that, in the group my friend A. put together. He gave me his card, even! (Not that I'm just gonna randomly call or email...) Nothing for today. I realized at about midnight that I'd planned to go see one of my favorite local bands at one of my favorite bars tonight but I totally, completely forgot. Oh well.

Habit #2: Didn't do any Sat. I just watched a DVD (I am Legend, which was actually good!) and went to bed. Spent most of today in bed too, after I got home from work and walking around in the nice weather with Lois. Did my 5 pushups tonight - after much internal debate.

Takin' what they're givin'

Yep. Sadly, I finally had to go back to work. It's been so nice lying in bed for days on end — I've never gotten more sleep in my life. And I didn't get anything fitness-, afghan-, or housecleaning-related done while I was at home, but it was apparently necessary for me to spend the time sleeping. I was trying to"listen to my body." (I wish sometimes it would listen to me!)

During my convalescence, I also signed up for Facebook, which is interesting, and I have like four very random friends. What a weird world of networks our internet age has started.

One facebook "friend" is the M guy I haven't even met yet. He owes me an email. I sorta want to just meet him, get it over with. I have no patience with this dating stuff.

I spent the evening at work, til after 8, and then went to the record store and then came home, took Lois for a long walk, made the world's most delicious sandwich, and then watched Little Children, which somewhat depressed me but I liked it. I now have that awkward-movie-taste-in-my-mouth thing, though, which makes me want to watch another movie before I go to bed, to have a different mood with me. I don't know. Part of me identified with the Ronnie character - unable to connect properly with anyone. It was a lonely film.

I saw The Lives of Others last night at the Davis with Sally and Eva. Almost too much of a feel-good ending for my tastes, though. What's with these movies that wrap it up all neatly? I like the raw edges. I guess I expected more of that from a European film.

My missing digital camera is a real issue. (See how boring this post is? It's the no-pics problemo.)

And I can't figure out what to do with my time tomorrow. If only I had a burning motivation to do ANYTHING with my life at this moment. And, you know, it doesn't help to feel as alone as I have recently. Maybe that will eventually help things along, I'll have to just face aloneness...

Wow. OK, this is getting a bit whiny; time to stop!

G'night.
